Melasma, although harmless, can be an unattractive and very embarrassing condition. However, you don’t have to put up with it. Melasma can be reduced safely and without any side effects by using Lightenex by PharmaClinix, the most effective way of lightening dark marks caused by hyperpigmentation.
Melasma, or mask of pregnancy, is a condition of hyper pigmentation. This can be reduced by skin lightening creams.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a dark facial skin discolouration which can appear on the faces of adults. It is not a harmful disease it can severely affect a person’s cosmetic appearance. Although it can affect anyone, melasma is most common in women, in particular pregnant women, on which it is often known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’, which over 70% of pregnant women suffer from.
- Women with a light brown skin type who are living in regions with intense sun exposure are particularly susceptible to develop this condition.
- Genetic predisposition is also a major factor in determining whether someone will develop melasma.
- Melasma can also increase in patients with thyroid disease.
- Other rare causes of melasma include allergic reactions to medications and cosmetics.
Symptoms
- Dark irregular patches on both sides of the face, commonly found on the cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead and upper lip. These patches often develop gradually over time. Melasma does not cause any other symptoms beyond the cosmetic discolouration.
You can reduce pigmentation by:
- Avoidance of sun and irritants
- Use of sunscreen is essential. A SPF 30 or higher should be selected, protecting against UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Sunscreen should be worn daily, whether or not it is sunny outside, indoors or outdoors.
- Application of depigmentation agents such as Lightenex which contains Kojic dipalmitate.
- Occasionally your doctor may recommend chemical peels or topical steroid creams.
- Cosmetic cover-ups can also be used to reduce the appearance of melasma
- To reduce the effects of the ‘mask of pregnancy’, make sure your diet contains enough folic acid, by taking folic acid supplements and eating food rich in foliates such as leafy vegetables and wholegrain food.
- Any facial cleansers, creams or make up which irritate the skin should be stopped immediately as this may worsen the melasma. If melasma develops after starting birth control pills, it may improve after discontinuing them.
